General Information on Wire Rope
1. Name of the parts composing wire rope
2. Lays of Wire RopeThe lays of wire ropes, with few exceptions, are roughly divided into two kinds -Lang's Lay and Regular Lay. The Lang's Lay rope offers a better wearing surface when in use and can be expected to serve for a longer priod than the Regular rope, which, meanwhile, is more flexible than Lang's Lay rope and easily spliced.
3. How to Measure Rope SizeThe size of a wire rope is the diameter of the circle which will just enclose all of the strands. The correct method is to measure over any pair of opposite strands.(See drawings)
4. Cores for Wire Ropes
SteelIWRC(Independent Wire Rope Core) the main core is an independent wire rope, normally having the construction7x7.IWRC(Independent Wire Rope Core) the main core is an independent wire strand, normally having the same construction as the outer strands of the rope.
FiberFiber cores are stranded and comprise either:Natural fibres such as sisal, help, jute, and cotton.Synthetic fibres such as polyamide, polyethylene, and Polypropylene.Asbestos fibres(heat resistant)
5. Preformed RopesIn the preforming process the wires and strands are given their final helical pitch before being laid up into rope.Ropes made in this way show no tendency to untwist when cut.
6. LubricationLubrication reduces internal friction of the wires and strands and protects against corrosion.Grease is applied to all ropes. If special lubricants are required this must be specifically stated at time of ordering.
7. Sheave and DrumWhen a rope is bent around the sheave or drum, individual wires in the strand are subjected to bending stress and repeated bending fatigue. To obtain a smooth operation and longer life for the wire rope line, it is necessary to keep the diameter of sheave and drum above the recommendable figures of the table and to keep the surface fo the grooves sharp and smooth.
Minimum diameter of sheave and drum(D=wire rope dia.)

8. Grades of Rope Wireour wire ropes are made of steel wires classified into following tensile strength grades to meet various requirements according to the applications.
Grade 135kg/mm2Special grade to meet requirement of hoisting ropes on traction elevators
Grade 150x160kg/mm2Galvanized wires coated with zinc through hot dip process for protection against corrostion.
Grade 165kg/mm2Ungalvanized and drawn galvanized wires for general purpose wire ropes
Grade 180kg/mm2Ungalvanized high tensile grade wires for general purpose wire ropes
Grade 195kg/mm2Extra high tensile grade is used in the manufacture of wire rope where ultimate breaking strength is required
